  • Cost listed is per student (Parents are welcome to observe, but may not participate unless registered for the class)

Beginning Music Theory I
Why Study Music Theory?
Students who understand music better enjoy it more.
Theory helps students read music and play by ear.
Understanding theory encourages students to experiment with music and composition.

Students explore the concepts of basic music theory including scales, intervals and sightreading through Games & Activities in a group setting.

Improvisation 101
Why Improvise?
Improvisation is part of the incredible enjoyment and power of the world of music.
Composers & performers in all styles have improvised.
Improvisation improves technique & stimulates creativity.
Improvisation develops an appreciation for all types of music.

Who Can Improvise?
Anyone interested in learning to improvise can do it ----  You can too!

Class Overview:
  • Students will listen to musical examples of improvisation
  • Students will be introduced to and study improvisation concepts
  • Students will work in groups on rhythmic idea development, melodic fitting and singing
  • Students can choose to perform as a soloist or in a group on instruments of their choice

Open to students grades 7 and up (including non-GMS students)
Minimum of 2 years of lessons on instrument of choice
This class is designed for any music students, especially high school and adult jazz students
Student should have a basic knowledge of scales and harmony

Beginning Music Theory II is a continuation of Beginning Music Theory I.  Any student is welcome to register for the class, even if they did not take the previous session.  Students registering for this class should have a basic understanding of music including rudimentary note naming and rhythm skills.
